Journal Club

Journal Clubs are a great way of supporting your research to reach a new audience. It is unlikely that you will have reason to establish your own journal club but there are some steps that you can take to make it easier for your work to be used at existing ones.

Identify an article about your work that is freely available
Prepare some questions to get readers thinking more (if they aren’t standard questions used)
Agree to join the club (virtually or in person) when they discuss your paper

Barriers

Journal club discussions are usually limited to about 60-90 minutes so may not allow an in-depth discussion of your work

Finding an existing journal club can be a challenge

Enablers

You might find joining existing journal club discussions particularly useful early in your own research process when you are identifying research questions

Journal clubs are also likely to lead to new connections and potential collaborations

Participating in journal clubs can help people understand your work more and lead to wider awareness

Be prepared to explain terms and jargon and make your work accessible

At a journal club people will be critiquing your work; make sure you are not defensive
